One of the most influential voices from 2009 and 2010, the muffinman recently spoke out against ql's current business model. You may remember the muffinman for his cvar wikipedia, his extensive map testing, his leak of the 2010 subscription model maps and prices and his work on numerous projects in the quake live community.
The message board:It is without a doubt getting much more inactive as time goes by, although it doesn't necessarily reflect the situation on the game servers. Point of the matter is it's easy to reply to threads etc. at any given time of the day, but it's the actual game that is important, not a bunch of (mostly) ridiculous threads like 'RL is overpowered' etc..
The gameplay: s the only thing this game really has going for it since there's no real competition to this game at this point in time. Something like a live version of the classic UT, if done right, could put a serious dent to this game's traffic.
Quake Live is, imo, a perfect game Whoa! Hold on there young bucky! Sure, some of the criticism levelled against this game is subjective and/or biased, but there are blatant facts that prove this game is so far from perfect, and sure, in the same vein there are things that were done right with this game. The problem is that the former seems to outweigh the latter. A perfect game (which doesn't exist btw) would not lock up my browser when loading, kick me from the server every map change, feel like it's running at 40 FPS when it's a steady 125FPS, and have an embarrassing failure of a business model that must make Carmack cringe.
Long story short, if QL was perfect -- without any conceivable flaw -- Carmack himself wouldn't have implied it was a failure and we would now have a big dev team working actively on this with regular, high-value updates. Instead we have a glitchy, low-budget title with 2 devs picking their noses and releasing a miserable update of (mostly) unrequested features every 3+ months.
I'm sure all the Pro members are eagerly awaiting the lawlsy g_speed pro server setting that will be added in the next update. That, and another new map they'll never play.

He's 100% right but as always, 3 months and a week since the last update, things continue to slow down in quake live. Even the general discussion subforum spans 3 days now, instead of 1 like it did for 3 years[, eg. the lack of forum activity muffinman was speaking about. Servers are only occupied by tier 4 players and the few noobs left, quickly get demolished and pushed out of the game.
The biggest scandal is the position sponge and syncerror have taken on this matter insisting people pay for premium/pro accounts to escape the evergrowing list of cheaters or in the case of NA ctf players, to escape deathsyphon's alts every day. Soon the swampys, bimnutz and mevil's will be gone for good and that's when this game will truly flatline for NA.

The traffic:Then you're lucky to be in one of the few regions where there's more traffic. Over where I'm from it's difficult to get anything but CA and duels going, and that's just standard servers. Premium/pro games are practically non-existent, hence why I cancelled my pro sub. Sure it isn't dead, but it is far from active. The message board:It is without a doubt getting much more inactive as time goes by, although it doesn't necessarily reflect the situation on the game servers.
