It's not syncerror or sponge. But it is someone with very sensitive information who knows the ins and outs of ql very precisely. He can't just be a focus member, because they are limited to some aspects of the game still. Whoever he is, his opinions mirror that of sync and sponge at id.

The game itself is basically free. What id sells with Quake Live is the access to the server architecture and further development. Both are a constant cost. It's not a retail game you develop then ship : those are already paid for by the company so they can sell it for a one-time fee. You can't sell constant dev and servers costs that way.
